Not cancelled. Not greenlit either. Barbie 2 is stuck in a contract window: Warner Bros. has to lock new deals with Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, and Ryan Gosling before December 2026, or the film rights situation with Mattel changes in a way that makes this version of the sequel much harder to keep intact.
That is the real headline. The first movie never put those three on a sequel option, so the studio is renegotiating from scratch after a $1.5 billion hit.
What Warner Bros. said on the record
Studio co-chairs Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca put the stall in a joint statement:
We have a rights deal with Mattel in place and have made a series of big offers to try and finalize deals to make the next ‘Barbie’ film. Unfortunately, we have been unable to reach an agreement thus far.
That is the primary studio line. Offers are real. Signatures are not.
