Where to start Brandon Sanderson in 2026

Brandon Sanderson where to start in 2026: Mistborn vs Stormlight vs standalones vs Skyward. One decision table, skip list, and links into Mistborn order.

Where to start Brandon Sanderson in 2026

If you searched Brandon Sanderson where to start in 2026, ignore the panic about reading every Cosmere book in “correct” order. Pick one on-ramp, finish that series’ book one, then decide if you want more of the same world or a different gear.

Sanderson’s own FAQ is already a decision map. This page turns it into a utility table and adds the 2026 forks people actually hit: Mistborn vs Stormlight vs standalones vs Cytoverse.

The one table (print this)

If you want…Start withUniverseCommitment after book 1
Fantasy heist + hard magic rules*Mistborn: The Final Empire*Cosmere (Scadrial)Trilogy, then optional Era 2
Massive epic, armies, oaths, long runway*The Way of Kings*Cosmere (Roshar)Five-book Arc 1 already out
Standalone Cosmere with politics + disease city*Elantris*CosmereOne novel (sequels later)
Color, Breath, romance-forward Cosmere*Warbreaker*CosmereStandalone now
Fairy-tale voice, lower Cosmere pressure*Tress of the Emerald Sea*Cosmere (Secret Project)Standalone-ish; easter eggs later
YA flight-school sci-fi, not Cosmere*Skyward*CytoverseQuartet, then Riftwake
Superhero dystopia, not Cosmere*Steelheart*ReckonersTrilogy

That matches Sanderson’s public guidance on What order should I read them in?:

If you don’t typically read fantasy, try Steelheart or Elantris. If you consider yourself a fantasy reader, try Mistborn: the Final Empire or The Way of Kings. If you like romance, try Warbreaker.

Mistborn vs Stormlight vs standalone

Mistborn path (default for most fantasy readers)

The Final Empire is Ocean’s Eleven energy with metal-powered magic. Book one is a complete heist arc. If it clicks, continue Era 1 before touching Era 2.

Use our dedicated checklist next: Mistborn reading order.

Start here if: you want a tight magic system and a finishable trilogy before a decade-long epic. Skip if: you only want 1000-page battlefield epics on day one.

Stormlight path (default for epic binge readers)

The Way of Kings is slower to ignite and heavier per volume. The payoff is Arc 1 scale through Wind and Truth. Do not sample book four first.

Start here if: you like doorstop fantasy and multi-POV campaigns. Skip if: you bounce on long setups or want a single weekend novel.

Standalone Cosmere path (default if you hate series lock-in)

  • Elantris: cursed city, broken magic, political rescue

  • Warbreaker: Breath, color, court intrigue, stronger romance dial

  • Tress of the Emerald Sea: Hoid-adjacent fairy tale voice; Cosmere light touch

Sanderson lists Final Empire, Emperor’s Soul, Way of Kings, Elantris, and Warbreaker as valid Cosmere starting points. Tidbits cross-inform later. You do not need to catch them on pass one.

What not to start with in 2026

Tempting wrong startWhy not
*The Alloy of Law*Soft reboot that spoils Mistborn Era 1
*Mistborn: Secret History*Companion novella; huge Era 1 spoilers
Mid-Stormlight or mid-MistbornSequential within each series
*Songrise* / Riftwake #2 chatterSequel working title; not a Cosmere on-ramp ([explained here](/posts/songrise-explained-cosmere-sanderson))
Ghostbloods / Mistborn Era 3 rumorsNot a starter shelf yet

Cosmere vs not Cosmere (so you do not mix lanes)

  • Cosmere starters: Mistborn, Stormlight, Elantris, Warbreaker, Secret Projects like Tress

  • Not Cosmere: Skyward / Cytoverse, Reckoners (Steelheart), Alcatraz, Rithmatist

Skyward cover
Skyward cover, Cytoverse non-Cosmere starter

If you want spaceship dogfights after a Cosmere taste, finish Skyward through Defiant, then wait on Blightfall (Riftwake). That lane does not unlock Mistborn secrets.

30-second picker

  1. Fantasy reader who likes heists → Mistborn

  2. Fantasy reader who likes epics → Way of Kings

  3. Wants one Cosmere book, no series vow → Elantris, Warbreaker, or Tress

  4. Prefers YA sci-fi → Skyward

  5. Prefers superheroes → Steelheart

Then stop researching and read chapter one.
