If you like city builders that punish bad adjacency and roguelikes that reward broken engines, Combolands is the Steam demo to burn a lunch break on before the full game lands. Crux Games (Sam Alfred of Terra Nil and Skye Scott) turned their Itch hit Tiny Towns into a proper Steam release, with Landfall backing the push. The free demo is live now. The full game is dated August 24, 2026 on Windows PC via Steam.
Demo trailer
CruxGames puts the hook in plain language on the trailer page:
Announcing COMBOLANDS, a deckbuilder where your cards are buildings and the map is your deck.
That line is the whole pitch. You are not drafting poker hands. You are placing structures on a procedurally generated island so adjacency bonuses cascade into population spikes.

How a week actually works
Each run starts on a fresh island layout. You get a short calendar of weeks, a small hand of building actions, and limited rerolls. Placing a hunter hut against forest tiles, or an apiary against flower tiles, is not flavor text. It is the scoring system. More matching resource nodes mean bigger population pops when that building fires.
Early weeks forgive messy placement. Later weeks do not. Population thresholds climb, and suddenly you need multipliers, enclosed wall bonuses, rails, and buildings that care about broader tile categories like nature. Clear the woods too early and your forest engines starve. Leave them up and you may brick a cleared-ground guild. The demo also gives you a finite demolish budget and, once per run, a stretch of three extra turns to claw a milestone.

Between rounds you dump gold into a shop for heirlooms, free rerolls, and modifiers that can swing a dying run. Steam's demo page is explicit about the slice you are playing: 3 guilds (7 at launch), 50 heirlooms (100+ at launch), and 5 council members (13+ at launch). Guilds bias which buildings show up in your action pool. The full game promises 21 guild combinations and roughly 30-minute runs.
