Sea of Thieves July 2026 update: Custom Seas patch 3.8.1

Rare's July 2026 Sea of Thieves update lands as patch 3.8.1 on July 23 with Custom Seas menu fixes and preset renaming, then a stacked Gold & Glory reward weekend.

Sea of Thieves July 2026 update: Custom Seas patch 3.8.1

If you sail Sea of Thieves for Season 20's Custom Seas tools, the official July 2026 Update Trailer is the highlight reel. The useful part sits in Rare's monthly schedule: patch 3.8.1 on Thursday, July 23, then a stacked reward weekend after it.

This is the calendar-plus-patch checklist for crews who already live in Custom Seas and want to know what actually changed versus what the trailer only teases.

What Rare confirmed for July 23

Rare's This Month in Sea of Thieves: July 2026 post is explicit about the monthly update:

The next one will arrive on July 23rd, and is set to introduce some adjustments and improvements to the Custom Seas experience, a bundle of fixes across the board and of course new cosmetic offerings in the Pirate Emporium and Outpost shops!

Rare also reminds players that monthly updates continue even though Seasons no longer use the old three-Act structure.

The shipped 3.8.1 notes fill in the Custom Seas utility the trailer glosses over, including:

  • Usability, text, localisation, and UX fixes across the Command and Quick Command menus

  • Ability to rename Custom Seas presets before a preset is selected

  • Continued Free Camera and Legendary Locations work inside the Custom Seas toolkit

Check the full in-game or published release notes after you update for the complete fix list.

The late-July reward calendar

Around the patch, Rare's same monthly post stacks:

  • Gold & Glory Weekend Friday, July 24 through Monday, July 27: boosted gold, reputation, Guild Reputation, Renown, and Allegiance on High Seas

  • Summer Stunners Pirate Emporium sale the same weekend: select red-themed cosmetics up to 30% off, including sets Rare calls out such as Dark Warsmith and Barrel Bombardier

  • Twitch Drops Friday, July 24 through Wednesday, July 29 for linked accounts watching Sea of Thieves Partners (emote, title, dress, flag, and a six-hour long-watch Feline Bandana)

Earlier July already ran Fight Nights on a weekly 24-hour cadence (skipping weeks where Last Ship Standing conflicts), the Last Ship Standing music release on July 17, and a Bilge Rats Weekender (July 17-20) with Legends Week rewards and Legendary Message in a Bottle Voyages.

What the trailer does not tell you

  • Every Custom Seas rule or spawn tweak beyond the published 3.8.1 UI and rename notes (read the full patch list in-client)

  • Whether any old three-Act milestone track is returning (Rare says that season structure is not coming back)

  • Guaranteed Emporium discount inventory beyond the published Summer Stunners window once the sale goes live in-game
