S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Cost of Hope: August 20 release date

Zone stalkers tracking the first big story expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl finally have a hard calendar date. GSC Game World confirmed S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope launches August 20, 2026 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, with a free Update 2.0 landing for every base-game owner the same day.

Release date and platforms

Cost of Hope is the first major paid story expansion for Heart of Chornobyl. It ships day-and-date across Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. That is a cleaner launch than the base game, which reached PS5 a year after the PC and Xbox debut.

You can buy the expansion as standalone DLC, or unlock it through the Ultimate Edition / Season Pass if you already own that bundle. Wishlist pages are live on the major storefronts now if you want a launch-day ping.

What the trailer actually shows

The release-date trailer leans on the Zone's signature mood: binoculars on the horizon, industrial wreckage, and the pull toward places stalkers were never supposed to reach. GSC and Xbox both frame the pitch around two long-locked regions: Iron Forest and the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

Story-wise, you are still Skif. After you install the DLC, a PDA signal during the main campaign opens the expansion path, and the plot runs in parallel with Heart of Chornobyl rather than as a bolted-on epilogue. The studio has said the conflict between Duty and Freedom is the spine, with the fragile peace around the D4 Treaty starting to tear.

What the clip does not tell you

The trailer sells atmosphere. The utility details sit in GSC's announcement copy and the earlier Xbox Partner Preview write-up.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2: Cost of Hope will open the door to the center of the Zone on August 20, 2026.

That line is from GSC's own Steam community announcement. The studio's press release adds the second launch-day hook: Update 2.0 ships free for all Heart of Chornobyl owners on August 20, including a move to a newer Unreal Engine 5 build plus additional content and fixes. Full patch notes are still coming in the next few weeks.

Xbox Wire's March preview still matters for how you plan a playthrough. Cost of Hope is pitched as a large, non-linear chapter that can take dozens of hours, with each new region built as a real territory (hub plus smaller sites), not a single linear map. Both the base game and the expansion support Xbox Play Anywhere. GSC has also said Cost of Hope is the middle chapter of a planned three-part S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 story arc, with a second story DLC still unannounced.

What is not confirmed yet: standalone DLC price if you are not on Ultimate/Season Pass, exact Update 2.0 feature list, and how early in a fresh campaign the PDA signal can fire.

Where to play and what to do next

On August 20, grab Cost of Hope on your storefront of choice (or let Ultimate Edition unlock it), then install Update 2.0 whether or not you buy the expansion. Until then, wishlist the DLC and keep a Heart of Chornobyl save ready if you want to jump straight into the PDA thread.
