Warner Bros. posted the official trailer for Clayface, DC Studios’ horror-first take on a Gotham shapeshifter. Watch the goo and the revenge pitch first. Then the casting and crew facts the two-minute cut does not pause to explain.
What the trailer shows
Matt Hagen is not introduced as a punchline villain. He starts as a Gotham street kid turned Hollywood leading man, then gets wrecked by crime-boss violence and left disfigured. Abandoned by the people who used him, he takes a cutting-edge treatment that brings his face back, then breaks his grip on reality and points him at revenge.
The mood is body horror and identity freefall, not cape team-up energy. You see the face melt, the public life collapse, and the monster version of Clayface taking the wheel. It sells the movie as a stand-alone scare story that happens to wear a DC name.
What the trailer does not tell you
Mike Flanagan wrote it. The screenplay is by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, from a story by Flanagan. That is the Haunting of Hill House / Doctor Sleep horror brain on a Batman-world villain, not a committee punch-up. If the trailer feels more like a prestige monster movie than a shared-universe cameo reel, that credit is why.
James Watkins directs. Watkins comes from tense, nasty thrillers (including the Speak No Evil remake). DC is pairing that director with Flanagan’s script on purpose. This is a horror bet inside the wider DC slate, not a soft origin prologue for a Justice League team-up.
Matt Reeves is producing with Gunn and Safran. Reeves (the The Batman filmmaker) produces alongside Lynn Harris plus DC Studios’ James Gunn and Peter Safran. The movie is still a DC Studios title distributed by Warner Bros., but the producer list signals Gotham crime-world texture more than bright DCU house style.
When to see it
Clayface opens in North American theaters October 23, 2026, with international dates starting October 21, 2026. Tom Rhys Harries plays Matt Hagen. The cast also includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, Nancy Carroll, and Joshua James.
That late-October date is not an accident. Warner is aiming this at Halloween season as a horror thriller with a comic-book brand attached, not as another summer spectacle. If you want the scares clean, go in cold after the trailer. If you want the production context, Flanagan’s script and Watkins’ direction are the real headline under the goo.
