Sony dropped the official 4K trailer for Resident Evil, Zach Cregger’s new movie take on Capcom’s outbreak horror. Watch the Raccoon City panic first. Then the casting and timeline facts the cut does not stop to explain.
What the trailer shows
Bryan is a medical courier trying to make a drop at a Raccoon City hospital when one night collapses into an outbreak. The trailer sells dread, sprint survival, and mutated bodies filling the streets. It looks wet, loud, and mean in a way that tracks with Cregger’s recent horror work more than with the old live-action franchise house style.
You get the courier’s ordinary-night setup, the phone-call panic, and the creature chaos that follows. The pitch is simple: one civilian stuck on the wrong delivery route while the city dies around him.
What the trailer does not tell you
It runs alongside Resident Evil 2, not as a remake of it. Cregger has said the movie takes place on the periphery of the Resident Evil 2 timeline without using those game heroes. Same outbreak night energy, different street-level story. That is why you do not see Leon, Claire, or Ada sold as the trailer’s stars.
Zach Cregger wrote and directed it. The screenplay is by Cregger and Shay Hatten. Cregger also produces. After Barbarian and Weapons, Sony is betting his horror brand can reset the film series again without copying the old Paul W.S. Anderson house style beat for beat.
Austin Abrams leads a small cast. Abrams plays Bryan. Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser also star. This is built as a tight survival story, not a packed franchise reunion reel.
When to see it
Resident Evil opens in theaters September 18, 2026. Columbia Pictures and Constantin Film are behind it, in association with TriStar. Producers include Robert Kulzer, Zach Cregger, Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, Carter Swan, and Asad Qizilbash.
If you care about the games, go in knowing this is Capcom lore adjacent, not a shot-for-shot Leon campaign. If you care about modern horror, Cregger’s name is the real bait under the title card.
