One Night Only Is… Will Gluck’s Aug. 7 rom-com, in a clip

Universal just put the summer rom-com thesis on a 15-second chant. The new clip One Night Only Is… sells Will Gluck’s One Night Only as energetic, chaotic, unconventional, and “this summer’s biggest rom-com,” with theaters calling for Friday, August 7, 2026. If you needed a reminder that Olive Bridge still believes theatrical romance can print money after Anyone but You, this is that reminder.

The fuller studio logline (same page family as Universal’s movie hub / onenightonlymovie.com) is the actual premise:

This summer, Will Gluck, the filmmaker of Anyone but You and Easy A, celebrates modern romantic comedy on the big screen with a fresh, witty, swoony original film about searching for love on the least romantic night of the year.

The hook (yes, that hook)

Academy Award nominee Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown, Top Gun: Maverick) and BAFTA nominee Callum Turner (Masters of the Air, Fantastic Beasts) play Allie and Owen, two love-starved strangers who collide in an “ever-so-slightly fictionalized” New York on the one night of the year when single people are allowed to have sex.

Recently dumped Owen and hopeful romantic Allie might be the only two people treating the night like a relationship problem instead of a sprint. They spark, then a chain of missteps and side quests keeps yanking them apart while they race toward (and away from) each other across the city.

Why this is the Gluck playbook

Gluck’s theatrical rom-coms (Easy A, Friends with Benefits, Anyone but You) sell chemistry first and high-concept second. One Night Only flips the usual meet-cute calendar: the least romantic civic holiday becomes the only legal window for the thing the city is otherwise banned from. That is The Purge as dating app pressure, written for swoon instead of slaughter.
