PlayStation ends new game discs in January 2028

Sony will stop producing physical discs for all new PlayStation games starting January 2028. Pre-2028 discs stay. Here is the official line and what is not confirmed.

PlayStation ends new game discs in January 2028

Yes. Starting January 2028, Sony Interactive Entertainment will stop producing physical discs for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles. That is not a rumor. It is official PlayStation Blog policy. Games that already shipped on disc, or that ship on disc before that cutoff, are not wiped from shelves by this rule.

What Sony actually said

On July 1, 2026, PlayStation Blog spelled out the policy in plain language:

As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.

Sony's framing for why:

This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs.

Read the second sentence twice. Sony is not claiming discs never mattered. It is saying digital demand already won the volume fight, and manufacturing policy is catching up.

Sony also says it will keep letting players buy new games "at retailers or PlayStation Store," which leaves room for digital codes in boxes. A cardboard sleeve with a voucher is not the same thing as a playable Blu-ray.

What this means if you still buy plastic

If you want a resellable, lendable, offline-friendly disc for a 2026 or 2027 release, buy it while publishers still press them. After January 2028, new PlayStation releases are licenses tied to accounts and storefronts. That is the hard line.

Sony's blog closes with a customer-preference pitch. The utility takeaway is colder: the industry's last major disc pipeline on PlayStation has a dated end for new titles. Collectors should treat late 2026 and all of 2027 as the last window for new-release discs, not a vibe.
