Will my PlayStation discs still work after 2028?

Yes. Sony's January 2028 cutoff stops new disc presses for new games. It does not cancel the discs you already own. Here is the official line.

Will my PlayStation discs still work after 2028?

Yes. Sony's January 2028 rule stops new disc production for new PlayStation releases. It does not brick the Blu-rays you already own, and it does not cancel disc editions that already launched or that still launch before the cutoff.

The sentence that answers the panic

PlayStation Blog is explicit:

This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.

If your shelf is full of PS4 and PS5 discs from 2013 through 2027, that sentence is the whole FAQ. Keep the disc drive hardware that can read them. Keep the discs clean. Sony did not announce a kill switch for legacy optical media.

Disc-drive PlayStation hardware still matters for the library you already paid for

What actually changes on January 1, 2028

SituationAfter Jan 2028
Disc you already ownStill a disc. Policy does not erase it.
New game releasing on disc before cutoffStill a disc release.
Brand-new PlayStation game after cutoffNo new pressed disc. Digital formats only.
Your PS5 with a driveStill plays older discs (hardware permitting).
Buying "physical" new releases at retailLikely codes or other digital retail formats, not new presses

Sony's other line explains the business motive, not a library wipe:

Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.

PlayStation product still for collectors and libraries
Collectors still have a runway for pre-2028 disc releases

What can still go wrong (without rewriting Sony's post)

Discs can fail mechanically. Consoles can lose drive support in a future SKU. Day-one patches still need downloads. None of that is the same as "Sony turns off your 2024 disc in 2028." Separate hardware risk from the manufacturing policy.

If you are shopping a 2026 or 2027 must-own title and you care about resale or lending, buy the real disc while presses exist. After the cutoff, new releases follow the license path covered in Do you own digital PlayStation games after 2028?.
