Disney is kicking the tires on free, ad-supported streaming channels. CEO Josh D'Amaro told investors on the company's fiscal Q3 2026 earnings call that FAST-style free TV is under consideration, not greenlit.
If you only remember one line: nothing is launching today. The interesting part is why Disney wants the option.
What D'Amaro actually said
On the call, D'Amaro framed free channels as reach, ads, and a subscriber funnel, not a replacement for Disney+ or Hulu.
We see it as a way to expand our reach to a customer segment that's more price sensitive, and expanding our reach is one of our strategic priorities. Unlike a lot of our AVOD competitors, we're fairly well sold, meaning more inventory would actually help us accelerate our ad revenue growth. And then finally, a free offering could help us drive top of funnel Disney+ subscriber growth. So nothing specific to announce today, but definitely something that we're considering.
That is the whole scoop in one answer: price-sensitive viewers, more ad inventory because Disney says its AVOD side is already tightly sold, and a free front door into paid Disney+.

How this fits Disney's stated streaming plan
Disney's own Q3 FY26 earnings commentary still puts Disney+ at the center, not a free app. D'Amaro called Disney+ the "digital centerpiece" for IP that also shows up in parks, retail, and games. The long-term streaming plan he described sits on two pillars: make the core paid experience best-in-class, then stitch Disney's businesses into one digital ecosystem.
Other Q3 beats that matter for the FAST conversation:
| Item | Status from Disney materials / call |
|---|---|
| FAST / free linear-style channels | Considering; no launch details |
| Disney+ as digital centerpiece | Confirmed priority in Q3 commentary |
