Fans who finished Regular Show with Pops gone for good needed a clean answer for how The Lost Tapes keeps putting him (and other dead characters) on screen. San Diego Comic-Con chatter from the cast and crew makes the framing clearer: the afterlife is the unlock, not a soft reboot of adult Mordecai and Rigby.
Why dead characters can show up again
The Lost Tapes already opened with Pops in heaven, watching memory tapes and discovering a stash of unseen park adventures. That device lets new episodes sit anywhere inside the original timeline instead of marching forward from the series finale. Creator J.G. Quintel told Warner Bros. Television that the afterlife setup also reopens the roster of characters who died in the original run.
Now that we're in the afterlife, that docket has been like reopened, and we're like, these characters can be in the afterlife.
Quintel said that during Warner Bros. Television's Comic-Con interview with the Lost Tapes team. Pops returning in the premiere was the first big proof of concept. Expect more afterlife cameos as the season's Pops-focused arc unfolds.
Adult Mordecai and Rigby are not the pitch
A lot of fans assumed a sequel would pick up after the original ending, with settled-down Mordecai and Rigby or even their kids. Storyboard artist Sean Szeles shut that door for this series.
We thought of it, but it never really appealed to us to start from that jumping-off point. A lot of reboots would take that route, like, 'Oh, we're going to follow Rigby's kids and get into those same shenanigans.' We wanted to jump back into the world we loved and do more episodes for adventures we haven't seen.
Szeles also flagged a season-long arc with Pops that the crew is more excited about than a future-set reboot. Adult versions of the leads are not ruled out as one-off appearances, but a full series centered on that life stage is not the plan.
