The long quiet around Amazon's Warhammer 40,000 live-action deal finally got a primary-source update. In Games Workshop's latest annual report, CEO Kevin Rountree confirmed that Amazon has brought in United Artists and Mike Flanagan, that Henry Cavill and Vertigo remain attached, and that Flanagan has finished initial outlines and should move to script next. There is still no release date, and GW is blunt that these adaptations will take years.
What Rountree put on the record
The licensing section of the report is the clearest public language the company has used since the Amazon agreement landed in December 2024:
The project continues in line with our contractual agreement with Amazon. This same contract prohibits us from sharing certain specific details or commercial terms. What we can share is that Amazon has brought on board United Artists (UA) and Mike Flanagan. Vertigo and Henry Cavill remain involved as they have been for some time. Having completed initial outlines, Mike should soon be moving on to script. Meanwhile, UA have been decisive and brought their renowned pace and quality to the project.
That paragraph does three useful things. It kills the "Cavill quietly left" rumor cycle. It names the production muscle (United Artists) and the writer/director voice (Flanagan). It also keeps the format fuzzy: GW does not say whether Flanagan's first pass is a series, a film, or the opening wedge of a multi-title slate.
Why Flanagan fits the grimdark brief
Flanagan's recent run (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher) is built on institutional dread, sincere believers, and ensembles that stay human under horror pressure. That maps cleanly onto 40K's "there are no clean heroes" tone without needing a marketing slogan. He is already inside Amazon's orbit via the Carrie adaptation, which makes the handoff less theoretical than a cold open.
Cavill remains the public face and longtime Warhammer fan attached to produce and star. Vertigo stays as the production partner named alongside him. Expect casting and a locked title only after scripts exist.
Animation is moving in parallel

Calendar patience, not premiere hype. GW's own line is that successful adaptations take years. Watch for Flanagan finishing a script, a UA/Amazon casting notice, and the Deathwatch animated series as the nearer Warhammer screen hit.
